Charles,

What makes this better than Mofuse? It also does iPhone specific interfaces which are pretty sweet.

You should take a look at the iPhone theme plugin. It makes your site smart enough to detect iphone/ipod touch users and present them with a sweet, sweet interface:

I use it, and like it.

Are you going to make your comments feed available? Given the high quality of the commentors on your blog, I know I would appreciate it - especially over checking in on "The Buzz" on the homepage all the time... (but then, I'm just slack)

Cheers for this will definitely try out Mofuse. One plugin that's a godsend is Audit Trail - it can recover accidentally deleted stuff - if you don't have it and delete a post the only way to retrieve can be via an old RSS feed!

Here's my list - pretty much aligns with yours: http://theparallaxview.com/2009/03/top-10-wp-plugins/

I agree, open links in the same tab/window. Users will learn to right click > open in new tab/middle click soon enough. This way they can choose a new window if they want one - if you force a new window onto them, they never have the choice NOT to have a new one.

Hi Rob,

If you mean you're going to use the hosted WordPress, I urge you to read this and reconsider: http://jonontech.com/2009/03/30/goodbye-wordpresscom-hello-freedom/

The setup of your own domain and hosting with someone like GoDaddy is really easy and pretty cheap. Don't make the same cock-up I did :-)

I am looking to make the leap from (outdated?) Blogger to Wordpress. Although I won't be using the downloadable version this article is really useful cheers. That Mofuse plugin in particular looks very interesting!

Best practice is that links should open in the same window. If I want a new tab/window, I will make that call myself.

It's generally thought ok to open in a new window if this is visually represented (there's a pretty standard icon for this now), the 'title' attribute of the link says that a new window will open, and if the link text says something like 'Launch xyz'.

Like Martin says, the 'target' attribute isn't valid XHTML strict, but you can always go transitional.

If the link to an external site opens within the same window, it's usually nice to have the title attribute for the link say something like 'Leaves this website'.

New windows from links are tricky. If you're using a strict DOCTYPE then the usual method of target="_blank" on the link is invalid, so most people avoid it anyway. My take is that if you're browsing a site and want a new window for a link, open it in a new tab yourself.
