Evil Doctor Browser vs CSS3 Spiderman

Well, she begged, she cried
She pleaded with me all last night
She wants me to go out
And find somebody to fight
- HERO BLUES

Here at Kaldor Towers, we’ve been spending a lot of time comparing the performance of the browsers on various phones and tablets. Our latest scientific study involved the newly created CSS3 Spiderman by Anthony Calzadilla (@acalzadilla). Have a look at all his other animations too. He rocks.

Anyway – to the experiment. The video below shows our test devices, all of which run WebKit, showing the animation at the same time. WARNING: The way Spiderman is dismembered/vanished/frozen in time by some of the villainous devices may offend some viewers. And apologies for the excessive shaking and bad lighting.

The devices used for the experiment:

  • Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 running Android 2.2 (Froyo.XXJPO)
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 running Android 2.2 (Froyo.XWJJ7)
  • Motorola XOOM MZ601 running Androod 3.0.1 (Honeycomb H.6.1-38-1)
  • Google Nexus S running Android 2.3.4 (Gingerbread)
  • iPad 2 running iOS 5 Beta 1 [REDACTED. DETAILS LATER]
  • iPad 2 running iOS 4.3
  • iPad 1 running iOS 4.3.1
  • iPhone 4 running iOS 4.3.1

The repeatable testing methodology:

  • Kill all other applications running on the device
  • Browse to http://www.optimum7.com/css3-man/animation.html on the device browsers
  • Run the the whole animation so that all the assets are preloaded
  • Turn off the sound on all devices except one to avoid going insane
  • Start all the animations again at roughly the same time
  • Watch in horror as spidey is mutilated

With great power comes great responsibility. Android and iOS both have great power. Time for them to improve their browsers. Especially the Android devices.
