So The Daily is live. Just finished watching the launch announcement and was impressed. I was lucky enough to see some sneaky preview concept versions a few months ago, and they’ve really turned it into reality in a ridiculously short amount of time.
Yeah, yeah, it did crash once in the launch demo. But all iPad apps crash, right? I’m sure they’ll iron out the last few kinks over the coming days. If you’re in the US (or are wise in the ways of reverse proxies *), get it from the App Store now. If you’re anywhere else, or don’t know what a reserve proxy is, have a look at the web site, blog or FaceBook page.
I take my hat off to the techie brains behind the operation, John McKinley (@ourparents) who, it turns out, is not only wise but also delivers on time. And of course we all love Jon Miller and his basketball analogies . Random aside: It was a year today that Jon Miller interviewed yours truly for his current job. He really is a lovely guy. **
The app is really feature rich. It can live update during the day, has 360 degree video, live audio articles, a large sports score database, games and good social integration. And it even has the weather!
I’m not smart enough to know if The Daily is going to be a roaring success or an unholy disaster. But I love the fact that Rupert tries bold things like this. That’s one of the many reasons I’ve loved the last year I’ve spent on The Darkside at News Corp. Someone in this industry has to try something.

I like the sound and look of this new app and strangely prefer the idea of a new ‘news’ brand being created for the iPad rather than an old brand (like The Times) being pushed into the touchscreen tablet environment. It probably shouldn’t matter one bit, but as a career-long digital worker I like the idea that traditional printed newspapers, such as The Times, are a haven from the 24 hour news echo chamber and relentless spread of social media. At least if you are committing words and pictures to physical print you have, through the nature of the process, to give what you are writing and the way you write it a bit more thought – as there is no ‘delete’ button once those presses roll
hmm – I never thought I’d feel nostalgic about grubby old newsprint… now where is that pipe and my old slippers?
